This piece is a musical plein air painting born from several hours' worth of sketching melodies while watching the midwinter Sun set outside my window in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The warmth of the sunset colors sings against the cold austerity of the leafless trees and the winter landscape. The Earth is dormant, the Sun is dying, all creatures prepare for sleep. The music evokes, with uninterrupted yet ever changing texture, the continuous slow shifts in color as the Sun goes down, finally giving way to a serene and starry sky.
