Woodwind quintet

Complete in one movement

This work was premiered April 4th, 2026 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI
This piece was inspired by a poem by Emily Dickinson, depicting a melancholy spring:
I cannot meet the Spring unmoved—
I feel the old desire—
A Hurry with a lingering, mixed,
A Warrant to be fair—
A Competition in my sense
With something hid in Her—
And as she vanishes, Remorse
I saw no more of Her.
OUT Ensemble specializes in performing and promoting works by LGBTQ+ composers. It is now widely believed that Emily Dickinson was a lesbian, so it is doubly fitting to highlight her work in this way. One can imagine a double understanding of her words, refering at once to the season, and to a relationship that was not to be. This piece is included on OUT ensembles debut album, Seasons of Change.
Composers can earn royalties from performances of their work, but we need the concert programs to prove the performances happened. If you perform one of my pieces, please submit the program here.
