The soil upon which we walk tells countless stories of the myriad lifeforms that inhabited this Earth before us. Their transformation, growth, accumulation, and decay shaped and brought to being our bodies, our landscapes, the creatures we know, and the air we breathe. This piece tells the stories of six giant evolutionary steps in Earth's history. I call these evolution “myths” not in the sense that they did not happen—they did—but in the hope that by hallowing them in this way, bringing beauty and reverence to these stories, I can afford them with some of the same love and awe afforded to figures like Beowulf, Heracles, and Gilgamesh. That which we hold sacred, we imbue with sacredness. In learning and holding sacred the Earthʼs past, perhaps we can move towards the same for her present and future.
For the first two billion years of life on Earth, every living thing was a single cell. It was a world populated exclusively by microbes. Then, about 600 million years ago, and up to 25 independent times since, those unicellular microbes have joined together and evolved to form more complex organisms. As of 2026, scientists are still investigating what mechanism or mechanisms could have facilitated what amounts to nothing less than a biological revolution, and the invention of collaboration on the most basic level. The most prominent hypothesis, however, posits that multicellularity came about through an advantageous glitch in the process of cell division, wherein the two daughter cells do not separate from each other completely, but continue to live as a single being with two nuclei. This movement illustrates this process by invoking the structure of DNA, the process of cell division, and the discovery of new potentialities.
Archaeopteris, the first species of tree to grow on Earth over 380 million years ago. A pine-like tree with leaves similar to ferns, it reproduced via spores rather than seeds. With little competition from other plants, it soon spread far and wide. Though they have been extinct since well before the time of the dinosaurs, their roots, decaying leaf litter, and the habitats they fostered changed the surface of our planet forever.

Tiktaalik is the fish who decided to walk on land, the great-times-several million grandmother of everything on land with four legs. In reality, they were amphibious creatures who spent their lives both in and out of the water, but this piece imagines a first foray onto land, a journey of discovery, doubt, and joy.
Delitzschala bitterfeldensis, the first known flying insect, resembled a dragonfly and lived on the sap of trees. They likely did not metamorphose as modern insects do, but instead hatched from their eggs as tiny versions of their inch-long adult form
