"All the Sun Touches" is a solar devotional, a celebration of the clear sunlight that makes all things beautiful, that coaxes each bud to open and brings color to the Earth. It is no longer mysterious to me why the Ancient Greeks assigned both light and music to a single deity. Light and music are related by their entanglement with time. The daily and yearly cycles of light and darkness are not just a universal experience of living beings on this planet, they are the evolutionary impetus that honed us, over myriads of sacred change, to live our lives according to their rhythm. Light is how we experience time, and as artist Jean-Michel Basquiat famously said, "music is how we decorate time"—how we manipulate that experience, subjectivize it, and share it among groups. In this "decoration," I invite you to listen for the rising of the Sun, his journey through the sky, and the ordinary, miraculous awakening of the Earth below.
